Isles De HoenigThe Isles D'Hoenig have developed in many intriguing ways in the history of Evendarr's involvement. The numerous amount of Isles and difficulty in which to traverse the waterways have led to the development of many different cultures. The most prevalent being the barbarians of the main land and the island of Eit, who call themselves "Ozgur-halk", or free people but are called "unutkan" by the tribes of other islands. Unutkan translated means the forgetful because those who stayed closest to the cities of Evendarr have forgotten much of their culture and behave much like average humans yet still retaining superstition, and still observing some ritualistic practices. The barbarians on Islands further south and east have retained much of their culture and still have many tribalistic rites of passage. It is said there is a council that leads these peoples but there practices are somewhat private. Many people in the isles, particularly those in the east and south, prefer barter rather than use Evendarrian coin, in fact some view trade in this as an insult. Many of the wealthier merchants are also craftsmen in one some sort, others simply are roving peddlers that travel many of the isles and trade between the various peoples. Though few risk traveling to the southern isles where most travelers are unwelcome. The waterways of the isles are not easily navigable and take very experienced sailors to keep from running aground. Because of this there is a large demand for sailors and navigators within the Fellmist Sea in which the isles reside. It is also for this reason that there has been prolific pirating in the past and present. There are few options of travel to various ports and the coastlines allow for easy ambush in many areas. Gypsies have long been blamed for the pirating as there are a few families that travel the waters and make port infrequently. These nomads of the sea are said to know every hiding space, cove and underground cave that exists in the isles, as well as many creatures unseen by land dwellers eyes. These Gypsies are known for their tales of strange intelligent sea beings in which they trade who live beneath the waves. |
